General Education Outcomes

BRCC has identified four specific college-level competencies within the general education core that are tracked for associate degree students to gauge the level of proficiency of its graduates. These outcomes are listed in each applicable course syllabus. Instructors should list the learning outcomes on their syllabi along with the more specific course competencies. The general education outcomes are:

• Communication: Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate through various media to.enhance students’ reading, writing, and speaking skills for professional and academic settings.
  • Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
    • 1.1 Reading and Comprehension: Students will read various forms of written material and demonstrate an adequate level of understanding by:
      • 1.1.1 - identifying key points,
      • 1.1.2 - summarizing main ideas, and
      • 1.1.3 - identifying rhetorical strategies.
    • 1.2 Writing: Students will write clear and organized documents as appropriate within specific disciplines by:
      • 1.2.1 - constructing texts in the style specific to the discipline,
      • 1.2.2 - selecting relevant topics and supporting information for the specific discipline, and
      • 1.2.3 - developing organized and logically consistent texts.
    • 1.3 Speaking: Students will deliver oral presentations by:
      • 1.3.1 - employing verbal and non-verbal communication skills,
      • 1.3.2 - using credible information in a speech,
      • 1.3.3 - demonstrating organizational patterns to structure a speech, and
      • 1.3.4 - adapting information for the audience.
• Mathematics: Students will solve problems and communicate findings using discipline-appropriate techniques and technologies.

    • 2.1 Calculating: Students will apply course-specific technology software by:
      • 2.1.1 - entering and accurately performing calculations,
      • 2.1.2 - analyzing and/or displaying data, and
      • 2.1.3 - solving problems.
    • 2.2 Modeling: Students will model and analyze real-world problems by:
      • 2.2.1 - correctly reformulating problems into a mathematical context,
      • 2.2.2 - accurately solving problems, and 
      • 2.2.3 - interpreting results.
    • 2.3 Cross-Curricular Application: Students will apply mathematics in other fields and demonstrate acceptable mathematical modeling ability by:
      • 2.3.1 - correctly reformulating problems into a mathematical context,
      • 2.3.2 - accurately solving problems, and
      • 2.3.3 - interpreting results.
• Computer Skills: Students will properly employ appropriate computing software and technology to store, manipulate, and communication information.
• Essential Workplace Skills: Students will demonstrate attitudes and behaviors necessary to function effectively as an employee.
